Don't Think, Just Do

These past few weeks in RLA, we've been working on writing strong personal essays with BLAST off leads; SHAPEly conclusions; and different types of evidence such as personal anecdotes, expert opinion, or other people's anecdotes. So here is my personal essay.

Don't Think, Just Do
Every weekend, I tell myself I’ll do my homework on Saturday, so I don’t have it for Sunday. But it never happens. On Saturdays, I’ll have chats, games, and other interferences open while I slowly inch along with homework. Then on Sunday, I’m working like crazy trying to get homework done before dinner. The reason for that is procrastination. Having something to do, but not wanting to do it. Stalling. People have all sort of solutions for it. But for me, it’s just one philosophy that gets me through that. In fact, that motto helps me in various ways. I believe the motto “just do it” can give me confidence, make me do things I need to, and stop me from worrying.
First, I think saying “just do it” gives me confidence. I remember once I had to give a book talk on Harry Potter, where I was dressed up, and planned to talk in a British accent; no one else had done anything like that. I can still think back to that moment. Rapidly twiddling my fingers, I sighed and thought, I don’t think I can do this. What if it doesn’t turn out the way I want to? What if no one likes it? The rest of the students settled down; that was my cue. I shut my eyes and thought, Ok. I’m just going to do it. Be confident. I didn’t think about why I did not want to do it and just did. In the end, my book talk was a big success. You see, saying “just do it” gave me quick confidence in that situation. All in all, “just do it” stops me from thinking too much and therefore makes me forget my underconfidence.
“Just do it” can make me do things I don’t want to. Procrastination, for example. As a student, I procrastinate all the time. There are times when I have around an hour to do homework, and I know it’s better to start early, but I don’t want to do it. Many websites say that procrastination is human nature. Everyone procrastinates. However, in my opinion, the best solution to it is just to not think about it and just get right in to it. I asked my mom, and she told me that she has a lot of household work that she can procrastinate on; but when she tells herself “just do it,” she thinks about how it just has to be done. For her, “just do it” is also a way to forget why, and just do. Nobody denies that there are some really specific ways to get over procrastination, I think the basis of all of those strategies is just doing it and getting started. In other words, even if you have an idea that can get you around procrastination, you still need to get started. Every time I procrastinate, I hear the words, “just do it” in my head, and that really helps me push the mental obstruction out of my way, and just get straight to what I need to do.
Finally, I think just do it stops me from worrying. I worry about doing things all the time. When I say, “just do it” I don’t think about why I worry, I just go ahead and do. Writing this essay, for example. I didn’t have the right essays to choose from, and I was worried about how it would all work out. I remember that as I walked out of the RLA classroom, I thought, Oh no. What am I going to do tonight? I have to find reasons for that essay, or figure something else out. And I have to do it all by tomorrow. At the end, “just do it” told me not to think so much, and just to get into it. I had prepared some faulty reasons for that current essay; but before long, I found myself drafting this passionate essay. Not only that, but my mom said that she uses “just do it” when she is pondering about something or doubtful if she should do something. She said it makes her not worry as much, and believe that it’s ok. At the end of the day, “just do it” stops me from thinking so much; and equally important, stops me from worrying.
Some people have other solutions to these problems. On one hand, people have all sorts of organizational solutions; but on the other hand, “just do it” is a way to get started. Underconfidence, procrastination, and worries are barriers; and just do it pushes them away. Once I get it into my head I don’t think. The bottom line is, it’s just do it, and that’s it.

Fitness iMovie- How to Improve Your Pushups

We made this video to show people the importance of fitness. This movie helps people improve their push-up score, and doing these exercises can help one to continue improving; that helps personal fitness. It teaches someone that they should keep improving, and these are some ways to do that.
My role in this video was one of the 'trainers' who was trying to help this student's pushup score. This plot was meant to show someone that these exercises help them specifically for pushups, and it's not to hard to do them.
Making this video taught me that I need to strengthen the right muscles to do the right exercises. I, myself sometimes struggle with pushups, and now I know that I can use these. Doing that research helped me understand that you don't need have a hard workout to do pushups.

Chemistry Homework-Questions

1. What are the three (main) states of matter?

solids, liquids, and gasses.

2. Explain the properties of a solid, liquid, and a gas. Talk about the movement of particles.

Solids- hard; particles are in a tight, organized arrangement
Liquids- free flowing; fluid; particles are close to each other, but not in a tight arrangement
Gasses- particles move rapidly, and have much larger spaces between each other than liquid or solid particles

3. Changing the state of matter is a physical change. When energy (in the form of heat) is added or taken away matter can change from one state to another.

It will be a physical change because you are not changing the chemical build-up of the matter, you are just changing the form it is in. Adding or taking away energy can change the state of matter. For example, if you add heat to ice, you get a liquid (water), and if you have enough heat, the water will turn to a gas. An example of taking away energy is condensation. You are taking energy away from the gas to turn in into a liquid.

Gr 6 Final Scripted Performance

This week was my last week of drama. I performed in two short plays for my final grade. One was titled, 'The Grave' and another was titled, 'Remote Chance'. Here is a reflection on my trimester in drama:
I think projection was one of the things I did best. I could hear what I was saying pretty easily. I think I was using my diaphragm because I didn't feel like I was straining my throat, and my voice was audible. While I was performing, I did feel that I had vocal variety, in 'The Grave' especially. But when I watched the video, I realized I could've been a little more dramatic with my voice. I think my voice wasn't very varied in 'Remote Chance'. I couldn't see my facial expressions in the videos, but I think I did have facial expressions that suited the situation my characters were playing. I am really proud of 'The Grave' group because I think I did my very best in that group, and I really liked how the story did turn out scary. I was also proud of my 'Remote Chance' group because that play was really funny, because of everyone's contribution to that play. Overall, I think I could've put more effort into 'Remote Chance' because my voice sounded pretty flat and didn't have enough expression to show what my character wanted to say.

At the beginning of drama, I gave myself an 8.5/10 to show how eager I was to perform and do this class. Now, I am probably around a 9/10 because I have learned to be a little more brave while I perform and I also know how to use a lot more vocal variety. Before taking this class, my voice was pretty flat when I presented. Now, I know how to change my voice. To sum it all up, I am glad I took drama this year.

Fraction Comparison Reflection

Why is it a good thing to know several ways to compare fractions?
The way you compare fractions depends on the fractions you need to compare. Some methods are easier with certain fractions, and others are harder with certain fractions. For example; when I want to compare the fractions 11/23 and 15/29, benchmark fractions would be a good method to use. 11/23 is slightly lower than a half, and 15/29 is a little greater than a half. To compare those two fractions, you could cross multiply, but that would take longer and be more complicated than using benchmark fractions. Both methods will work, but a certain method is more efficient and easier to compute.

Shooting Kabul Boiling Point Reading Response

In Shooting Kabul by N.H. Senzai, Fadi reaches his boiling point when he realizes it wasn’t his fault that Mariam got lost. Fadi feels guilty throughout the book that it was his fault his little sister Mariam got lost because of him; in this scene he tells his art teacher, Ms. Bethune about it. In the chapter before, Fadi figured out that he didn't win the photo contest (which was his chance to win a trip to India, and attempt to save his sister who is lost in India's neighboring country, Pakistan), and he reacted in a bad way. So, Fadi came to Ms.Bethune to apologize for his bad reaction, and explain why it was so important he won that contest.
Ms.Bethune tells Fadi, “It wasn’t your fault that poor Mariam was lost.” ...
Ms. Bethune says, “Look, honey, bad things happen to good people. And you were in a bad, bad situation. What if you had stopped to put that darn Barbie in your bag and both of you had been left behind.”
“Oh,” said Fadi. I hadn’t thought of it that way.(page 237)
Fadi’s biggest pressure throughout the book is that it was his fault Mariam got lost and here he realizes things could’ve been worse, and it wasn’t all his fault. After this, Fadi starts to feel more positive and doesn’t worry about it being his fault as much. This scene also clearly changes the way Fadi thinks about it, which he wasn’t able to do over the entire book. Fadi also told his family about how he thought it was his fault Mariam got lost, which he had been avoiding the whole book. A theme this leads to is to always have hope because Fadi felt so hopeless and bad about what happened, but he realized that he needed to have hope. Fadi also learned not to blame himself and put so much pressure on himself, even during tough times. At the end of the book, he came clean to his family, and didn’t feel very pressured.

Cartesian Diver Explanation

In science, as part of our density unit, we did the cartesian diver experiment. Here is my explanation:

When the diver is floating at the top of the bottle, it is positively buoyant, because it is floating. When we squeeze the bottle, we are decreasing the volume of the bottle, and increasing the mass of the diver. This is because the water is going into the diver, increasing the mass. The ballast to make the diver to make it sink was water, because the water is going into it to make it heavier. When the diver is in the middle of the bottle, it is neutrally buoyant, because it is just floating in the middle. So, squeezing the bottle slightly causes the diver to become neutrally buoyant. The diver is negatively buoyant when we squeeze the bottle hard, which makes it sink to the bottom. When we squeeze the bottle hard and water goes into the diver, the density of the diver must have turned to more than 1 g/cm3 because it is sinking. When the diver is at the very top, the density would be less than 1 g/cm3, because it is floating. The density would be around 1 g/cm3 when the diver is in the middle.

Sportsmanship In Everyday Life

Sportsmanship is playing a fair game, how you play the game, and your general attitude during the game play. Sportsmanship is how you act during the game. An example of good sportsmanship would be shaking your opponent's hand at the end of the game. One way I have demonstrated sportsmanship this year is congratulating the other team in the floor hockey unit. When the other team scored a goal, my team would compliment them on that.
In PE, some ways anyone can demonstrate sportsmanship are playing by the rules, trying to avoid arguing with the opponent, congratulating the opponent when they score, and shaking the other team's hand at the end.
Sportsmanship can be used in everyday life as well as on the sporting field. Some ways you can do this are: encouraging others, helping people who are injured, and congratulating others when they win or triumph in something.
1 new way I want to try demonstrating sportsmanship on the sporting field is by congratulating the opponent when they score more often, because I know that this is a really good example of sportsmanship and that I don't do this very often.

RLA Quarter 1 Reflection

1. I think I have started to read more often in the past quarter. I normally don't read on the weekends, but I have started to read more often on the weekends and finish books faster. I finished Shooting Kabul in five days, when I am normally a pretty slow reader. I have started to comprehend more while I read and pay more attention. Sometimes while you read, your mind isn't really on what your reading. I don't do that as often now. I don't think I have been varying my genres too much because I am reading mostly realistic fiction (which are my character books), but I want to read other books as well as my character books. And even though I am reading more often, I still think I can read more to get done with books faster.
2. One thing I really got better at in Writer's Workshop is adding a "heart" to your story. Before, my writing had almost no heart. I was really proud of my "So What" at the end of my personal narrative, and showing why my story is meaningful to me. I could work on spreading the "heart" throughout my story. I got better at paragraphing. I experimented with paragraphing in different ways to show importance and time change. My story did have some parts that could've been sped up because they were unimportant. I think I did well on adding DAT; which is dialogue, action, and thinking. I think I was able to add in descriptive DAT to my story.
3. My reading responses have gotten more deep and meaningful, and I am able to explain more about them. My claims show more insight and deeper thinking about the text. I can now find evidence across the text, which shows a tracked claim, rather than one piece of evidence. My explanations are longer because I have to explain more about how my claim makes sense, since they are deeper. I think I have gotten better at analyzing characters' feelings and relationships. My first reading response wasn't very specific, but my reading responses now are specific and I am able to explain what my thought is well.

Maybe it Was a Good Thing

For the past few weeks in RLA, we have been working on writing our personal narratives. We learned about having DAT (Dialogue, Action, and Thinking), a clear "So What" that explains why the story is important to us, a good lead, and lots of detail. The area I grew most in while writing these personal narratives was writing a good "So What". Without further ado, here is my personal narrative, Maybe it Was a Good Thing.

I guessed that the double knot in my stomach meant a combination of excitement and nervousness. Mostly nervousness. That could be a good thing, I hoped internally.
The large crowd of people behind me roared. I spun around, grinned, and waved to all the people I knew. Most of them were just acquaintances. I knew my mom was in the back, and my friends were somewhere in the crowd. But I couldn’t see any of my closest friends.
There were butterflies in my stomach and I had no idea how I was going to do any of this.
The gym was just a loud room. The only thing I could hear was people cheering and chatting in the crowd. Kids were making up cheers for their friends, teachers and parents were getting their cameras ready; and here I was, sitting here being as nervous as I could be.
One of the PE teachers walked to the center of the gym, with a microphone in his hand. I turned back around and listened to what he had started to say.
“Welcome to the Basketball Shootout!” blared his voice from the speaker behind him. That rapidly made the crowd hush down.
“Thank you, everyone for being here to cheer on your friends, children, or just fellow students!” he paused. “All of us PE teachers are glad to be here and I’m sure our players are too,” he said, gesturing toward us. “Students will get 60 seconds to shoot today.”
Double the time of the semi-finals, I thought. That should be good, I reassured myself, remembering how well I had done then; making four 3-pointers, exactly according to plan. I hadn’t missed one shot. I was actually impressed with my own performance yesterday in the semi-finals. I hadn’t expected myself to do so well then. I knew I normally didn’t do as well as I wanted to in these types of things; where you have to prepare the whole week, then you have just one shot at it.
“The order for the players will be 3rd grade girls, 3rd grade boys, 4th grade girls, 4th grade boys, and the same with 5th grade,” the PE teacher continued.
Ok, I thought to myself. 2nd to last, not bad. That’ll give me some time to watch others and hopefully get rid of my nerves. I thought my nerves would die down, but I didn’t know how that would happen.
“But first, let’s congratulate our players for making it to here!” the PE teacher called out. The entire audience burst out into claps and cheers. I liked to be congratulated, but it did put a whole lot of pressure on me. I had to do well, I internally pressured myself. I had to do well.
“Let’s get started,” said the PE teacher, and handed the microphone to another PE teacher.
This PE teacher called out, “First: 3rd grade girls.”
As I watched different kids win, and get 3rd place, the exact opposite of what I hoped to happen happened. Not one bit of my nerves went away. I felt as if the butterflies in my stomach had turned to moths instead. Soon enough, my name was called out and I grabbed a basketball and went to the fraction of the gym I had been assigned to. I dribbled the ball from side to side, and took a practice shot. The ball hit the rim of the hoop and dropped back down.

Focus, I thought. But before I could take another practice shot, the teacher called, “On your marks..”
Oh no, I thought. I was not ready. But I had to be. What was worse was somehow all of my closest friends were at the inside of the barrier right behind me. They were cheering my name loudly: “Let’s go Kavya, let’s go!”
“Get set,” called the PE teacher.
The pressure was on.
“GO!”
The moment the whistle blew, I knew to stick to the strategy I had practiced this whole week: go for the 3-pointers. I ran over to the 3-pointer line and aimed, jumped, and shot. Missed it. I ran over to grab the ball, then returned to the 3-pointer line. I shot. Missed again. I was almost mad at myself, muttering, “Kavya, you practiced for this; focus. You have to do this.”
After missing another shot from the 3-pointer line, the words, Ok. I have to start making some 2-pointers, zipped through my head.
I shot the ball into the hoop from the 2-pointer line. I made it. Making this shot increased my confidence. I took a quick glance at the timer. 20 seconds left. I made another shot from the 2-pointer line. I made it. I knew I was low on time so I took a shot from the 1-pointer line and missed. Then, I made a quick 2-pointer.
I was down to the last 5 seconds.
I took a quick 1-pointer. Score.
Another 1-pointer. Score.
“3!” The audience yelled.
I can do this, I thought.
“2!” they cheered.
Another 1-pointer. Score.
One more…
“1!” I took the quickest shot I could. Missed. I sighed and wiped the sweat off of my forehead.
“9 points,” the PE teacher notified me. I already knew that I had gotten 3rd place, because I had scored 12 points in the semi-finals when I had only 30 seconds. My idea was confirmed when I asked the other girls what score they had gotten.
At this point, I felt a mix of emotions. I felt regret. I somewhat felt I could have done better. I felt mad at myself that I got 3 points less in double the time as the semifinals. I was smiling in the joy of knowing I had made it till here, but my toe was squirming around in my shoe in some sort of regret. I guess you could say that I knew I should be happy for making it till here, but I didn’t really feel that happiness.
I went up to collect my certificate after they called my name. My body language showed that I was happy, and I did feel that way, but the regret still stung me.
But, as the crowd started to disperse, it hit me. Just like that. Within a few seconds, I understood. I had practiced for more than an hour every day of this week. I had played in front of this giant crowd, under so much pressure. I kept going after not scoring in the first 30 seconds. I had put so much effort into this, that it was almost unreasonable for me to regret any of it. And, sure I could’ve done better under the pressure, but that didn’t matter. It didn’t matter than I had gotten 3rd place. That is not going to make any difference in the long run.
One shootout is not going to define the best player. Making it till here is more than amazing for me.
By the time these thoughts were done whizzing through my head, I had friends patting my back, complimenting how I had played, and a big grin on my face.
My mom asked me, “You’re ok, right? Getting third place?” in a sort of awkward way.
“Yeah,” I nodded. “I’m alright.”
The one thing I had just learned was that it didn’t matter. It really didn’t matter.

Finding My Volume

Here is the video I made about my science assignment-finding my volume. It is just about a minute long, and shows the two solutions I used to find my volume using water displacement.

My first solution involved water displacement. My plan was to fill up my bathtub till an amount in which I think I can fit my whole body in, mark the height, and submerge myself entirely into the water. After measuring the height of the water and marking it both before and after I went into the bathtub, I found my volume. I had displaced 6 centimeters high of water. (The water level was 24 cm before I went in and 30 cm while I was in the water.) I then had to multiply the height of the water I had displaced by the surface area of the water. I multiplied the width of the water (45 cm) by the length of the bathtub (125 cm) by 6 cm (the height of the water I had displaced). My product was 33,750 cm3, or 33.7 liters.

I wanted to check my answer with another solution. This was to fill up the bathtub to the second mark (the water height with me in it); then use my 500ml measuring cup and took out water, counting each full cup. To compare this method to my first strategy, I would need around 66 cups because 500ml x 2= 1 liter, and with the first method, I got 33 liters. Using this method, I got 64 cups, which is 32 liters. This means my volume is between 32 and 34 liters.

Here are two assumptions I made before performing this experiment:

  • My bathtub has the shape of a rectangular prism.
  • My swimsuit and goggles do not have a significant enough volume to interfere with calculating my volume.

Factor Rainbow or Factor Tree?

When is it better to use the 'factor rainbow' method, rather than the 'factor tree' method for finding factors?
I think it is better to use the factor rainbow method when the numbers are low, because there wouldn't be as many numbers to write down. For example when I need to find the LCM or GCF of 12 and 6, it wouldn't make sense to use the factor rainbow method. But using the factor rainbow method is quick since 12 and 6 are low numbers and don't have as many factors. It's better to use the factor tree method when the numbers are big because you don't have to write down as much. For example, finding the LCM or GCF of larger numbers like 84 and 48 or finding the LCM or GCF of multiple numbers like 24, 72, and 80.

8.5

8.5
TEN is a person who is dying to hit the stage on day one of drama and would willingly perform in front of all of 7th grade right NOW!  ONE is a person who would rather be ANYWHERE but the stage and would prefer to be wrapped up in a blanket back in their bed hugging their teddy bear. On this scale of one to ten, I would be an 8.5 because I really like acting and making other people laugh. I like to entertain people. I have had some experience with acting and drama, and I have really enjoyed it. I have always found pretending to be other people and being dramatic really fun. But, I am not the kind of person who would just hop onto the stage and perform. I do get nervous before I go onto stage, and sometimes shy. Even though I get nervous, I like the feeling of having nerves and butterflies in my stomach. I think it makes me do well on the stage, enjoy it more, and the whole thing feels real. I am looking forward to acting in drama class and showing people what I can do on stage. I do get nervous, but with the nervousness comes excitement! I am always excited to be on stage and get a chance to perform.

Neutral Actor Homework

Image from Google Images

For my neutral actor homework, I watched CSI: Miami 8.  Here are some things I noticed about the neutral actors or extras:
  • The extras are walking both in front of and behind the main characters, but they are blurred, so it is hard to notice them.
  • The extras are wearing all sorts of colours, but they are wearing regular street clothes.
  • The extras are wearing few or no accessories.
  • When the main characters walk out of a frame, there are no extras walking by. The extras are only a background for when the main characters are in a scene.
  • The extras are wearing clothing that fits the scene (e.g. in a hospital, they wear nurse costumes)
  • The main characters or an important object is always in the center.
  • Some scenes just have the feet or arms of the extras showing, because the camera is focused on any object.
  • The extras don't move or turn suddenly.
  • It is hard to focus on extras with the volume on because the main characters' expressions match what they say and make you feel things like suspense. This distracts you.
  • The extras are doing things that match the scene (e.g. in an office, they are on laptops and looking at papers.)

Parent/Student Agreements

Displaying photo.JPG

This is the form for the parent handover for my laptop. I think I am responsible enough because I take care of other similar items (iPad, phone) and remember to charge those every night. Before I brush my teeth, I charge both my phone and my family iPad. I will now remember to charge my laptop at the same time. I am going to charge my laptop on my bedside.

Speed vs. Accuracy

I think that accuracy is more important than speed in math because if you are really fast, it is more likely that you could miss something, and get the answer wrong. The speed doesn't matter if you haven't got the right answer/idea. If you take your time with getting the answer, you will understand it better. Sometimes speed is good, but I think accuracy is more important in math.

Taking Care of Your Laptop

When you are given a $2,000 piece of equipment, it would of course be very important to take care of it. What sort of $2,000 piece of equipment? I am talking about a MacBook Air. This week we were given our MacBook Airs, which we were really excited about, but we had to learn a lot about; specifically how to take care of them.
The first rule that most kids already knew about was keeping laptops away from food and drinks. We learned that the crumbs from food and any liquid is deadly to the laptop’s keys. The laptop could stop working completely if food falls on the keys.
It is also very important to keep your laptops in your hand at all times. The reason why it’s a bad idea to put your laptop in your backpack is because things like books and pens could put pressure on it and crack the screen. So, for example, if you will be going to play a sport on the field after school, and you know you might throw your bag down, then you should put your laptop in your locker where it will be safe. The rule you want to follow is if your laptop will not be in your hand, it is in your locker.
Keeping your laptop in your hand relates to not being rough with your laptop. Don’t throw it around or swing it or do anything rough with it. Finally, we have to remember to zip up our laptop in it’s case when we are done using it, and to never take it out of it’s case, even when we are using it. The case keeps the laptop safe and it prevents the laptop from falling out when we are walking in the hallways.
Many people say, “With great power comes great responsibility.” The laptops are like the ‘great power’ and taking care of them is the ‘great responsibility’. Some disagree, but I believe that if we want to use the laptops to do a bunch of really cool stuff, we have to be responsible by taking good care of them.

Ryan Wayne and the Oreh Repus #2

Ryan Wayne and the Oreh Repus #2: Lucifer’s Lair
Chapter 1: Loy

I slung my bag over my shoulder and waved bye to Jake. He was my new best friend. After…Lucas. Long story. Anyway, I shut my locker and hopped down the stairs. I started off home. After walking about ten yards away from the school, I recognized a familiar brick wall. I remembered last year when I had gone through that and experienced...a lot. As I thought about all that had happened before, a familiar, blinding orange light appeared on the brick wall. I dropped my backpack and looked at the light. In the center of the light was an opening which I somehow knew led to the world of the Oreh Repus. I quickly entered because I knew that the light wouldn’t just randomly appear there if there was no reason for me to enter the world.

I knew that the last time I’d been there, the whole world had been deactivated (long story), so the whole world was empty. But let me just say that now, the world definitely looked like what I had not expected or imagined. The ground had that same orange glow, but wasn’t so bright that you couldn’t make out it was orange. The sky was a nice, clean, shiny blue that had a very faint glow, which wasn’t as bright as the ground. There were small little bright houses and people… or creatures that were probably the Oreh Repus. I had actually never seen an actual Oreh Repus anywhere because last time I’d been here, there was no life at all. The Oreh Repus pretty much had the body of a human, but their skin had all kinds of textures and patterns. Their houses kind of formed a large circle, and there were a few houses in the center. All over the circle, the Oreh Repus were practicing their powers. The little ones seemed to be watching their parents play around with their powers. I looked off to the side of everyone smiling and laughing, and saw a darker area. I guessed that was kind of like the bad part of town around here. Before I could notice the rest of what was going on, I saw all the Oreh Repus start to gasp and look at me. My face went red and I looked at myself to see if there was something wrong with me. A tall, fit man with a trimmed brown beard approached me before I asked the Oreh Repus what was wrong with me.
“Ryan,” he said, in a smooth, calm voice.
He looked very familiar and made me feel something familiar but I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I guess I looked confused or uncomfortable because he said, “Oh, let me introduce myself. I’m Loy, Ovilock’s son.”
That made much more sense. Loy gave me the same feeling Ovilock did. Behind his brown, neatly trimmed beard, and short, brown hair, you could see the resemblance. But his voice and build was nothing like Ovilock’s for sure. He had a smooth and strong voice and was much more stronger-looking than Ovilock.
“Ryan, my father has told me much about you.” he smiled. “Don’t feel confused. I understand that what you see is confusing, but I can catch you up.” Loy said. “So let me start of by telling you a little bit about this place.” We started walking as Loy spoke. “Ryan, this is where all the Oreh Repus live. This world in which we live is called the Orepus- a combination of Oreh and Repus, as my father must have told you previously.”
The name of the world was actually new information, but I didn’t want to interrupt. I just wanted to get on to the part where he tells me why I was meant to be here now.
“As you can see, the houses are divided by which one of the five powers the Oreh Repus has,” Loy continued. “The blue houses, over there,” he pointed. “are for the people with water powers. The red ones for fire Oreh Repus,” He paused and smiled since I had fire powers. He continued, “black for those who can change form, grey for wind powers, and green for earth powers.” Loy paused and thought for a moment. “That should be all that you didn’t know. Any questions?”
At first, I was hesitant to ask, but I just went ahead and said, “What about that dark area over there?” I pointed to the darker area I’d seen earlier.
“Ryan, this land is filled with all kind of different places, and that is...a place I’d like to discuss later.”
‘Probably shouldn’t bring that up again,’ I thought.
“That it?” Loy asked.
“Um...no. I was wondering why I was called here immediately.”
“Was hoping you’d ask,” he muttered sarcastically. “Ryan, there is another quest for you,” Loy paused. “You see, my father...his memory has been stolen.” Loy said. “Lucifer, as you know very well, has stolen Ovilock’s memory. He is planning to put my father’s memory and thoughts into his own mind, which will give him too much information about the Oreh Repus. And if my father’s memory is gone for too long, he will very well die.” Loy looked down for a second. “Ryan, you must retrieve my dad’s memory before he dies and before Lucifer takes it.” For Loy’s confident look and personality, he was pretty hesitant in telling me all this. “Ryan, you leave for the quest tomorrow morning.”
Loy showed me over to the center of all the houses, where I would stay for the night. That night I thought about all the things Loy had told me, really word for word. The way he hesitated didn’t seem right, even though he had been talking about his father losing his memory.
Chapter 2: The Lair

I woke up fresh in the morning and Loy sent me off.
“Ryan, remember that you will be fighting Lucifer again and that a lot of surprising things could happen…” Loy was hesitating again. “But Ryan, good luck,” he said, pat my back, and let me into Lucifer’s lair. I saw that same glowing orange light from last year and out came the prophecy:

On this quest, keep your sword in sight,
as all you’ll need to do is fight.
Ryan, you’ll learn much,
and a new villain will be within your touch.
You’ll doubt the thief,
and by the way, don’t eat the beef.

The beef part was kind of weird, but I didn’t have much time, so I just ignored it. I hadn’t got enough time to even look at the lair. It was actually just a black room. Black walls, black ceiling, black everything. But the walls and ceiling didn’t really look like they were painted black, they looked like they were infinite. Not that I wanted to run into them. I advanced with a sword of flames in my hand. (I forgot to tell you, I have fire powers) Before I could go further ahead, Lucifer’s familiar minions appeared. They were pretty much the same as the ones I’d encountered last year. But what I was afraid of was that they were just part of the first level of Lucifer’s lair. I’d struggled to beat them last year, so I wondered what could be ahead.
With my sword of flames, I wiped them out quickly with a bunch of slashing and stabbing. I advanced to the second part. So basically what happened was this tall black wall lifted up to open into the next part. What surprised me though, was what I saw in the next section.
Chapter 3: The Monster
So I guess what I expected was another group of those minions or something similar, but what I saw was what appeared to be a bigger minion. This one was at least ten feet tall. He had that same scaly skin, but on his chest was a giant black core. It was normal skin, but when I looked at it, I could feel it radiate power.
‘Boss level,’ I thought. ‘Lucifer decided to give me this guy already.’ I was scared at first, but out of all the things I could’ve learned last year, I learned that perseverance could beat almost anything.
I approached the monster, and muttered, ‘Let’s do this.’
But, by the first few seconds, I knew it would be tough to beat this guy. First of all, even the strongest stab I could give him with my sword still wouldn’t affect him. He seemed to have some kind of healing powers. I shoved my sword into his legs, and feet, and hands, and arms, but he never seemed to become the slightest bit tired or weak. I on the other hand, was extremely tired and injured, too. I had a giant gash through my leg, which the monster had simply done by running his talons down my leg. I dragged myself across the floor, so I could do something about the cut. Lucky for me, the monster kind of went to his corner, too. I blowed on the cut, and dabbed it with my shirt. Over in the monster’s corner, I noticed he was kind of moving his hands around, and one of his talons poked the black part in his chest. The monster gave out a loud scream. I plugged my ears and ducked down. Then I realized the monster’s weak spot was that black spot on his chest. I ran up as fast as I could with the gash in my leg, and threw my sword into his chest. He yelled out louder this time, and fell down. I smiled, proud of my thinking. One of the black faces lifted up, and opened up.

Chapter 4: Beef

In the next section, was something that was probably the very last thing I would imagine to be there. It was simply a black table with a plate of beef, my favorite food. At first I was a little suspicious because a plate of my favorite food wouldn’t just be there for me in this villain’s lair. But then again, I was really hungry. I had gotten really tired in the lair, and I would drool just by looking at plate. Mesmerized by the food, I slowly made my way up to the table. When I was less than a foot away, I realized what I was doing. And at that very moment, I remembered the prophecy. ‘And by the way, don’t eat the beef.’ I paused. Even though all I had been doing was getting close to eating a most likely poisoned food, I was breathing heavily. I paused, and calmed down.
After I had gotten hold of myself, I realized that there was almost no other way to get to the next section. I couldn’t eat the beef because the prophecy specifically told me not to. I tried shoving my sword into the ground, which didn’t work, but I wasn’t going to give up. I had a strong feeling that the next section was Lucifer himself. I punched the ground, stuck my sword into the walls, and did all I could, but nothing happened. I started to feel scared. I mean what if I got too late, and couldn’t save Ovilock? I mean, I would probably let everyone down, and… they’d hate me! That can’t happen. I took a deep breath and calmed down.
‘You’re not letting anyone down,’ I thought. ‘You’re going to do this; and save Ovilock.’
I started to feel really good. I was now standing straight up, with my sword by my side. And just after a few seconds, the door opened. ‘Hmmm,’ I thought. “Wonder what triggered that,” I muttered, but walked ahead, into the next section.

Chapter 5: Lucifer

As good as I had felt just a minute or so back, all of that disappeared in two seconds. The very first thing I saw after entering the next section was Lucifer, and… someone else. He seemed familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Lucifer sat on a throne above a short staircase. On his left was Ovilock, who was weak, pale, and almost dead. I gulped. This was probably the most scared I’d ever been, but I decided that it would be smart to use my brain at that point.
“Ahhhh, Ryan,” Lucifer said, as evil as ever.
‘The prophecy,’ I thought to myself. ‘...and a new villain will be within your touch,’ I remembered. “Ok, who’s the only person that is within my touch?” I muttered. ‘Loy!’ I thought. So the guy next to Lucifer was Loy. That’s why he had been acting so suspicious.
“Didn’t expect to see you here, Ryan,” Lucifer said, with a sly smile.
I didn’t know how I was supposed to reply, so I just stood there. But, I had a feeling that Lucifer felt kind of awkward too. I mean, he was definitely surprised that I had made it till here, and I bet he wondered what to do with me. This thought gave me quite a bit of confidence.
“Ryan, you are pretty much trapped, right?” Lucifer asked me.
I didn’t reply.
“Both of us know that you have no choice at this point, so let’s just get this done the easy way.”
I knew that I didn’t have that many choices, so I did the first thing that came to mind. I just ran straight up to Lucifer, my sword in front of me. Lucifer simply blocked me with his hand.
‘Bad idea,’ I thought.
“Ryan, I asked if we could do this the easy way. Why make things so complicated?”
Suddenly, I felt a big hit to my stomach. It was Loy. I frowned at him, and returned an evil smile. I slashed back at him with my sword, but the hit in the stomach really hurt. Luckily, he hadn’t done it with his sword. I got into a battle with Loy, and he wasn’t an easy fight. He blocked almost every hit I gave him. I started to win with quick slashes, but it was still a tough fight. But Loy’s attention went to Lucifer when Lucifer yelled out loud. I got the chance to bring Loy to the ground. Then I realized that Loy was fighting for Lucifer. Lucifer couldn’t fight because he was busy getting Ovilock’s memory right there. Loy was fighting for Lucifer, and Lucifer yelled because Loy was losing. I ran up to Lucifer and stabbed him in the leg. It healed immediately like the monster, two sections ago. Lucifer couldn’t fight with a sword, but he started using his long talons to get me. Even though they were really only fingernails, he used them like swords. He strategically pointed them at me, while I used my sword to fight.
We continued to fight, but in one go, Lucifer stuck his talons right through me. When I saw it, I expected to feel something really, really bad; but instead Lucifer shrieked.
“Ahhh!” he yelled. “You’re half human,” he growled, looking down at his long nails. “You’re blood.” His breathing had become uneasy.
As he started to stand up, I stabbed him in the chest, and he fell immediately. I walked over to Ovilock, who was just starting to regain consciousness.
“Ryan, be careful, Lucifer’s coming!” Ovilock said, in a scared tone.
“It’s ok,” I told him. “He’s dead,” I said, pointing to Lucifer’s fallen body.
Together, both of us made it out of the lair.

Chapter 6: Explanations

A few days later, after Ovilock was completely ok, I came to ask him about everything that had happened. Ovilock would know because he had this spell that informed him about all that happened. He would have an explanation for everything for sure.
“So… does Lucifer have your memory?”
Ovilock took a deep breath and replied, “To be honest with you, I’m not completely sure.” He paused. “But for now, we know we will be safe… for some time.” He looked away.
“And in one of the sections there was a plate of beef,” I told him, questioningly.
He smiled and said, “Ryan, the whole lair is build to confuse you. Something like that was bound to happen. I’m sure a few confusing things happened.”
I nodded and muttered, “Yeah.” I hesitated before I asked, “And Loy,” I paused,  because Ovilock started to look up at me. “I’m sorry I fought him… I just...” I looked down.
“Ryan, it’s not your fault. Loy betrayed us, and… it was your responsibility to fight him,” He replied slowly.
After a while, I asked Ovilock the thing I had been wondering the most.
“Why did Lucifer weaken when he stuck his talons into me?” I asked thoughtfully. “He said something about human blood.”
This made Ovilock wear a big grin. “You see, the last thing that Lucifer needed to extract from my memory was the fact that you were half human.” He paused. “Human blood is poisonous to demons like him.”
I paused to think about what Ovilock had just said. If it weren’t for me being half human, I’d have been dead. Me being half human saved me today, but what would save me tomorrow?
