Water Project: Week 4 (Post 1)

There are four things I really need to focus on for this week. First, making the poster. Freya and I are planning to have a description of each week on the poster with a conclusion about if our project was successful or not. We will type it up, and get the pictures we have and print them out. The poster is due on Thursday, so I definitely need to get started on that now.
Second, presenting to a 5th grade classroom. I just organized a presentation in a 5th grade class for Tuesday. I will make a short presentation, and hand out some flyers. Freya is bringing in cookies to sell and the wristbands. We are planning to sell the wristbands for $3 because we have a lot left and we need to sell them so we don't have a lot left. I realized that it is better to sell them even if we don't make profit, rather than have a bunch left over.
The third thing is preparing my presentation for science class. I need to decide if I am going to use a slide show or anything else. I need to have this ready by Thursday.
The fourth thing is sending the donations in to Charity: Water. We don't have a deadline for this, but we would want to do this as soon as possible. We are planning to give the money to our parents, and they donate by credit card, because it is easiest to donate that way.
I also think that the video I made is a great way of spreading awareness, and it is easy for most people because it is a short video accessible on YouTube. The video currently has 38 views. It is my goal to get it to 60 views by the Water Project Celebration on April 8th.

Water Project Week 3

This week I achieved quite a lot for my Water Project.
On Wednesday night, my mom brought home 160 copies of the flyers to put in people's mail boxes. It took us a while to cut and fold all of the flyers. But here is a picture of all the flyers we made on Wednesday.

It doesn't look like much, but that is 160 flyers. After that, I put them into people's mail boxes. But, there were a few mailboxes left, so on Thursday night, my mom brought some more flyers home. Here is a picture of me handing out the brochures.

By Thursday night, every mail box in my condo had a flyer in it.
I would've liked to pass them out earlier because most people only check their mail boxes once or twice a week, so a lot of people might not have seen the flyers in time for my event. But, the flyers do have information for donations, so some people might email one of us for donations. We had some extra flyers with us, so we were handing them out to anyone near the function room or anyone who came.

This week we held our even in my condo's function room. For the most part, it was successful. The brownies that Freya made sold out in the first few hours, but we were still left with some cookies. The wristbands also sold better than I thought they would. We ended up handing out a whole lot of flyers, which I was really proud of, because the flyers really inform people. They are also something that people can keep, and they spread awareness. I imagined that a lot of people would collect in the function room to watch my presentation and Freya's demonstration for the kids, but it was mostly people coming and going. What we started to do is walk up to people, show them the flyer, and ask them if they want to buy cookies, brownies, or wristbands. This attracted quite a few people. We had some customers that bought in bulk. For example, one man had a dinner party, so he bought eight brownies and three cookies.

Above and to the right is a picture of how we set up our sale. I had prepared a short presentation on the Water Crisis, but I never really gave it. There were a few groups of people who were interested, so I walked them through the flyer, and explained everything in detail, because I had a lot of knowledge about that.

The picture above is slightly blurry, but it is of Freya and I with our first customers. We drew them in by telling them we were selling baked goods for charity.

We didn't want the water filter demonstration to go to waste, since no one was doing it. I realized that no one was doing it because we didn't tell them about it. So there was one lady who's kids really liked our baked goods and kept coming back for them. So we asked her if her kids would like to see a short demonstration, and she was really happy about that.

Another thing we did to draw people in is I made a poster, and put up printouts of the flyers on the window of the function room. Here are pictures of that.

Finally, I finished my movie for our project and uploaded it to YouTube.  Here it is. 

At the end, we made around $200 in total. I learned that you really need to think about how you are going to draw people in. I could've delivered the flyers earlier; asked my mom to inform people she knows in our condo; and maybe even walked around the condo talking to people about it. I expected people to collect in the function room, rather than having groups of people come and go. I didn't think about what other people would come for.

Also, even though we earned $200, we spent a lot of money. We spend $3.30 on each wrist band, and we started by selling at $5, but not many people were buying them, so we dropped the price to $4. The function room costs $40 to book. At first, I was thinking that I would have to earn enough money to pay my mom back for the function room money, but she said that she was like a sponsor for our cause, so we didn't need to pay her back. We are not sure if we are going to pay Freya's parents back for the wristbands.

One thing I would want to change about this week is to divide the work up better. I felt that I was doing most of the work, and my partner wasn't doing as much. What I could've done about this is assigned my partner some of the work I was doing. I felt this because at certain points, I was getting really stressed about it, and my partner didn't have that much to be stressed about at all.

At first I thought bake sales were really generic and not very professional, so I didn't really want to do them. But then I realized that most people really like bake sales, so they are a good idea if you are trying to draw people in.

I will definitely remember interacting with the customers this week. One memorable one was a man who bought things with his family at first. His four year old son came back about 10 minutes later and handed be a handful of change. His dad said it was all of his savings.

To end our Water Project, we were thinking of going to present to a fifth grade class. We could present and sell baked goods there, so we earn more money. If we do make this decision, I think we should act on it quickly because in the past weeks we have been slow at doing things.

Music Composition Reading Response

In RLA, we have been learning about how music can connect to our books in terms of dynamics, tempo, timbre, and melody. I made a piece on Garage Band to represent the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Here is the response, with the piece I made.

Esperanza’s change and experiences through Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan are represented by the song ‘Fluctuation’ by Kavya N.

At the beginning of the book, things are very calm and easygoing for Esperanza. She lives in a rich family, has friends, and everything she needs. The song also starts with a major key, that is high. The start of the song gives a very positive effect. Here is an example from the first passage of the book that shows how relaxed things were for Esperanza.

p. 1: “‘Our land is alive, Esperanza,’ said Papa, taking her small hand as they walked through the gentle slopes of the vineyard. Leafy green vines draped the arbors and the grapes were ready to drop.”

Because the author is describing mainly nature and the outdoors, this depicts relaxation and calmness. Since Esperanza herself is going through this kind of scene, it shows that she doesn’t have much to think about, and has an easygoing life.

I added a harp into the beginning of the song as well to show smoothness, because a chord on the harp flows easily and connected (or legato in music terms). I did this because the melody was mainly detached (or staccato), but it still had a positive effect.

After this, the song has a minor key on strings, and has a low organ playing. This is meant to show chaos, since low notes and minor keys point to negativity. The minor key on strings starts at a note, goes very high, then goes lower than the first note. This makes it relate a lot to disorder. I chose to change the song’s mood so suddenly because the book’s mood changes suddenly as well. Esperanza has an easy life, until her father dies. Here is that scene:

p. 22 “‘Where’s Papa?’ she cried. Miguel hung his head. Alfonso didn’t say a word but the tears running down his round cheeks confirmed the worst. Mama fainted. Abuelita and Hortensia ran to her side. Esperanza felt her heart drop. A noise came from her mouth and slowly, her first breath of grief grew into a tormented cry. She fell to her knees and sank into a dark hole of despair…”

This scene really marks the beginning of the chaos in Esperanza’s life. All of the reactions that the author describes in detail in this scene contribute to the disorder.

After that part, the song starts to go into a fast and high piano player a minor key. This shows chaos as well, because of the tempo (speed) and pitch (high/low). This shows a lot of disruption or chaos. I did this because even after her dad dying, things get worse for Esperanza. Here is the scene:

p. 40: “‘Esperanza! Wake up!’ screamed Mama. ‘The house is on fire!’ Smoke drifted into the room… ‘Alfonso!’ screamed Mama. ‘Abuelita is not here!’ ‘We will find her. You must come now. The stairs are beginning to burn. Hurry!’”

The destruction and terror in this scene relate to the song getting faster. There is also a fast and high violin playing, that also relates. In general, the middle of the song shows a lot of chaos.

Then, I have a key on an electric piano playing that is neither a major nor minor key. This section gradually gets higher, which shows things improving. This connects to Esperanza because she learns to adapt to the new environment she is put in, and learns to solve her problems. Here is an example. Esperanza is taking care of the babies Pepe and Lupe (one of her jobs) and she feeds them plums because she thinks they will like them. But the plums don’t turn out to be so good for the babies:

(p. 142) ‘The plums,’ she groaned. They must have been too hard on their stomachs. What did Hortensia giver her when she was a child and was sick? She tried to remember. Rice water! But how did she make it? Esperanza put a pot on the stove and added a cup of rice. She wasn’t sure how much water to add but she remembered that when the rice didn’t come out soft Hortensia always said it needed more water… ‘That was exactly the right thing to do!’ Esperanza nodded and let out a long sigh of relief.”

This scene shows that Esperanza learns to solve her problems, and things are getting better for her. She was in a tough situation where she needed to act quickly. This also supports my next section, where I have another electric piano, this time in the minor key. It is also very soft and slow. This points to disorder. I added this in because Esperanza still goes through ups and downs even though she has accepted her situation. Here is another example of that, where Esperanza is getting to know about her mother having Valley Fever:

p. 157 “That she had already lost Papa and that Abuelita was too far away. Her voice strangled with fear. All she could do was whisper the doctor’s uncertain words, ‘If she survives.’”
This is a low moment for Esperanza, because she is struggling once again. But Esperanza has become a character who knows how to deal with issues better. I added a guitar strum in minor key at the end to show positivity because things are better for Esperanza internally. Also, I wanted to connect back to the beginning where I had a guitar playing, to show that Esperanza has come around in terms of how she feels about her life. But I didn’t use the exact same guitar piece to show that this time, she is a different Esperanza.

Water Project: Week 2 (Post 2)

This week we accomplished a few things, but more than that, we got a better sense of what we are doing. In other words, we formed a better plan. The biggest thing I did this week was complete our flyers. The flyers are extremely important because they advertise our cause, which will get people to support it. Below are pictures of the flyer.

Since we are planning an event in my condo, we plan to put a flyer in every resident's mail box. Because the flyers also have information in general, we want to hand them out to as many people as we can. 

In terms of planning, as I said, we achieved a lot. This week, we are going to ask the American Club for permission to set up a station in the hallway where we can hand out flyers and have a donation box. We are also planning an activity for kids at the event in my condo. Freya is planning to teach them how to make water filters. We also want to try to make a poster with information for my condo to draw people in to the event. Finally, we are planning to sell baked goods at my condo. 

The wristbands might not end up working out because the sellers are not replying. This is ok, because we are finding other things to sell now. 

One thing I didn't do this week that I really want to do next week is get down to doing things. This week I sort of took it easily, and went with the flow, but on the weekend I really realized that I needed to get things done. This is especially important since we have a lot to do this coming week. 

Greek Activities Reflection 2015

For the past month or so, we have been having our Greek Activities. We signed up for them, and had them twice a week. I participated in Greek Ball Games. 

Working Co-operatively- Meets

I gave myself a meets expectations for this because in Greek Ball Games, I think I worked with my team members well. I did this by participating with the planning for Greek Warfare. I also contributed to my team.

Critical Thinking- Exemplary

I think I thought out and planned my strategies really well for every ball game. For example, during Pila, I strategized to get back towards the person I am defending. In Greek Warfare, I strategized with my team to send the cavalry over only after multiple people are out. In Trigon, I planned my strategy well, and won for my team. 

Character- Meets

I think I met expectations for character because I was honest about getting out in the games, even if my team was loosing; especially in Greek Warfare. In Expulsum Ludere, I was honest about where the ball landed. 

Communication- Meets

I communicated with my team members in Greek Warfare especially when we were planning. In Episkyros, I communicated with the fellow defenders on when the ball was coming, and who we were defending. 

Responsible Team Member- Exemplary

I honestly and thoroughly did my part for the team. In Greek Warfare, I played the role I was supposed to, and was honest about the roles I have had. I also contributed and participated in our team's planning. 

Health- My Plate Meals

In Health, we have been learning about eating foods from all food groups (grain, fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein). We made a presentation to show our meals, then reflected on them at the end. Here it is:

Band: Concert Reflection March 2015

March 11, 2015 Concert Reflection

What is expected of me as a performer:  

1. What do I need to do leading up to the performance in terms of my own practicing?
Whenever we have a concert coming up, it is important to practice the pieces you are playing for the concert; especially the parts that you need more work on.

2. What is my responsibility on stage during a performance?
To be quiet, and remember the rest positions (instrument straight on your lap when conductor is off of podium; instrument on right knee when conductor is on podium).

3. What will I do differently in preparing for the next concert?
I want to practice only the parts that I need more work on, and my stamina. I also want to practice more often, and for short periods of time, rather than not often, and for long periods of time.

What is expected of me as an audience member:

1. What do I need to be doing while someone is performing?
It's important to be quiet, because it shows appreciation for the hard work. Sometimes long concerts can get repetitive, and possibly dull; but it is important to give them our attention.

2. What do I need to do after someone has performed?
Clap (also to show appreciation), but if the piece has multiple movements,  then make sure to clap only after all movements. You can use the program to tell how many movements have gone by; or if you are really unsure, then you can wait until the rest of the audience starts clapping.

3. What should I do if people around me are not being good audience members?
Give them the "shhh" sign, so you don't start talking either.

4. What will I do differently as an audience member for next concert?
Make sure to clap at the right time, and clap for longer; because I felt that I didn't do it enough.

I am most proud of... how i played accurately, and made the best sound possible.

Water Project: Week 2 (Post 1)

On Tuesday, we decided not to go on with the website. We made this decision because the website takes a long time, and it wasn't really needed. We decided to ask if we can host an event to make people aware at the American Club. We will ask for permission some time this week or next week. We also wanted to host an event in my condo, that will be centered around making people aware. If they really are interested, they may donate.
What we will be working on this week and this weekend are:
-finishing up our video
-getting permission to present in certain places
-planning presentations
-making posters
-making pamphlets

Another thing we are doing tomorrow is sending in our wrist band orders. We can get them made in less than 5 days, so we are sending in our designs. The wrist bands will be blue, and will have a slogan surrounded by a water droplet on each side. We will sell the wristbands at our events and on the school selling day.

Tech DIY Project Blog Divider

In Tech, we have a big DIY Project that we are beginning. The picture below is a divider (or logo) that I will use on my blog so you know I'm talking about my DIY project. 

Water Project: Week 1

In Science we have been assigned the Water Project. All we have to do is make some sort of difference for water related issues. So, there are really a lot of ways we can go with it. We get a month to work on the project, and have to do something, and make a presentation for it. For the project, I am working with Freya (her blog: http://sb-sas44584.blogspot.sg/) Part of the assignment is also to make at least one blog post a week explaining what we accomplished that week and any possible road blocks we hit during that week too. So here is Week 1:

This week we figured out that making people aware was our number one priority, and donating is our second priority. We agreed upon that because we thought that simply getting people's money is like "giving them a fish", but making them aware is like "teaching them how to fish". For example, if you have a huge event that attracts a lot of people, but they might not know what the event is for. If you talk to people about the issues, then a seed is planted in their mind, and later that person can take their own action. We do want to have a fund-raising event, but we are not sure what exactly we should do for the event.

What I mainly did this week is research. I wasn't planning to make a video, but I ended up starting to make a video. Freya already knew a water crisis organization called Water Aid. We contacted them this week with some questions. With my research I found an organization called Charity: Water, and I really like them because of the ideas they support and their model. So, if we do raise money, we would want to donate to one or both of those organizations.

To the left is a screenshot of our Water Project Notes document. This is just a way to stay organized. It has all of our research, ideas, and reminders. For example, we listed organizations we might donate to with their websites. We also have some ideas for events we might have.

The picture to the right is a screenshot of the Instagram account Freya and I made to advertise our cause. This is really important because if we do have an event, we need to advertise to get people to show up. We know that a lot of students in our school have an Instagram account, so this would promote our project in the school. You might notice the profile picture in this screenshot. Right now, it just says 'The Water Project' with a drop of water. We were trying to make a logo to brand our cause. We realized that only after we do more research to specify our cause, can we make a really nice logo. So, we decided to use this logo for now. We made this logo entirely by ourselves using Google Drawings, but we have no copy righted images. The video post is a short clip from our upcoming video.

Another thing we did was start making our website. In math, I recently made a website for a project using Wix HTML Editor. The website making site works really well, and it's easy to edit their templates. Again, we need to do more research and specify our cause to continue with the website.

One thing I didn't do this week that I want to to next week is get things done. At the beginning of this week, I though I would I have a lot of time later on. But I realized that I have gotten slightly behind. I want to manage my time better this week by working step by step and working a little every night. I realized that there is actually quite a bit of work to do. Our last week is Spring Break, and I don't want to have a whole lot to do then.

Math DYWBM Project

In math, we were recently given a project called DYWBM. (Do You Want to Be a Millionaire?) The idea was that we had to see how investing can make us millionaires. We were given a series of problems related to this and we learned how to optimize the use of a spreadsheet. Finally, we had to make either a presentation, website, or info-graphic to present the information and persuade people to invest now. Below is the link to my website.

HF Book Club #1

For the past few weeks, we have been reading historical fiction books in RLA. I read Sophia's War by Avi. Below is a video I made that highlights the book club meetings.



To reflect on these book clubs, I think  I got much better at piggybacking, as well as stammering as much. Over this year, I think I have learned to share the conversation more. I can ask others if they want to speak and share an idea without completely dominating the conversation. I also learned to share a variety of thoughts such as power, character, theme, author craft, etc. What I want to focus on for next time is speaking clearly while expressing my thoughts. I think I talk too fast, which makes me have to pause a lot. All together, I think I improved on a lot of things during this round of book clubs, but still have some things to work on.

The Box of Deceit- Greek Myth

In RLA, we have been writing Greek myths. We learned how to slow down the important moments and 'zap' our verbs. These skills add a lot of detail to the myths. I think I worked really hard on adding different types of detail like sensory detail (see, touch, smell, hear, taste). I also focused on slowing things down by using short sentences and using paragraphing to show suspense. Without further ado, here it is:

The Box of Deceit

A long time ago, there was a brave king named Agapios, ruler of the kingdom Thasos. The people of Thasos highly esteemed Agapios, as he was a brave warrior and a good leader. He was also a fine looking king– with smooth yet brave looks, and a thick brown beard. Agapios had everything he needed: an abundance of riches; love from his people; and admiration from people of other lands. But alas, the one thing King Agapios longed for was his true love Andreanna, who he loved more than life itself. She had been just like Agapios, which is why he adored her so much. She was brave and very adventurous– always seeking one or another quest to go on.

One day Andreanna got word of the demon Hypatos, who had been created by the god of the underworld, Hades. Hypatos guarded a special diamond, worth millions. Andreanna was immediately riveted by the idea of going to get the diamond of Hypatos. For her, it wasn’t about the money, it was about the thrill of the adventure. Even though Hypatos, a notorious demon, had slaughtered many powerful kings, Agapios did not want to go against Andreanna. So, he let her go, reminding her to be careful. But days went by, and Andreanna did not return. Agapios was fearful, but he also felt that Andreanna had to have succeeded, knowing her capabilities. As the people of Thasos began to get anxious about their queen, so did King Agapios. After many days, Agapios decided to go find Andreanna. When he entered the cave of Hypatos, Andreanna’s slewn body lay in front of him. He brought her body back to Thasos, and for three weeks the people mourned her death. But Agapios was infuriated. He wouldn’t enable someone to steal his love and get away. So, he called for all of Greece’s finest warriors to slay the beast, and all were in favor, after hearing about the brave Andreanna’s death. The band of warriors were victorious in their battle, and Agapios put the remains of Hypatos into a large chest, and kept it in a corner of his bedroom. 

But Agapios still yearned to be with Andreanna because there was nothing that could replace her in his life. Everyday, as he observed all the gold and riches he had in the large palace of his, he couldn’t help but remember Andreanna. ‘I must go to Hades,’ Agapios thought at once, ‘to get my dearest back from the dead.’

Agapios thanked Charon, ferryman of the underworld, for taking him across the River Styx, and made his way to Hades’ palace.

Fingers trembling, he stared in awe at the dark, deadly palace. It made him nervous, but he would do anything for Andreanna. Anxious yet fearless, Agapios walked into the palace, and bowed down to the god and asked, “Oh Hades, I have lost my wife, Andreanna, and can not live without her. Please bring her back to me!” 

Hades nodded, keeping a very solemn and calm look on his face. “Yes, Agapios. I will grant you Andreanna, under one condition.”

Agapios was delighted to hear that Hades had complied just like that; it filled him with an immediate excitement. Smile broadening, he speedily asked, “Yes, dear god. What must I do?”

“Open the box of Hypatos’ remains, and leave it open for a day. On the next night, I will give you Andreanna.”

At once, Agapios was thrilled to hear this. The gods’ conditions could be odd, however knowing how uptight the gods could be, he couldn’t believe it, and the condition seemed easy. Agapios skipped back to the palace, and the moment he returned, he unlocked the chest and threw it open. That night, he went to sleep anticipating being with his wife the very next day, but little did he know that would not happen. 

The next day, Agapios behaved in a joyous fashion. He decided to throw a party in the plateia for the return of his wife, and all the people of Thasos were invited. They drank, feasted, and danced. The sound of people singing, and dancing filled the air. But in the early evening, just a few hours before Andreanna was to return, BOOM! An ear-splitting crackle of thunder silenced the celebration. Sea splashing waves onto the festivities, the people cried out in fright.

“BRACE YOURSELVES,” someone shrieked. 

The smell of doom filled the air. The gods Zeus, lord of the skies, with a lightning bolt in his hand, and Poseidon, with a trident, hovered down the party. The sense of their power left everyone with fearful expressions. 

“AGAPIOS,” Zeus roared, as he soared down from the skies. 

Agapios stared blankly at Zeus, wondering what the gods were upset about. 

“DARE YOU DISTURB THE GODS OF OLYMPUS?” Zeus yelled, louder this time. 

“D-disturb the g-gods?” Agapios stuttered back. 

“YES, DISTURB MY BROTHER AND I!” 

“I don’t recall doing anything of the sort,” Agapios replied, utterly confused now.

“YOU CAME TO OLYMPUS, AND BEGAN TO INSULT POSEIDON AND MYSELF, AND BOTHER US, YOU MERE MORTAL,” Zeus explained.

“But, dear god, with all due respect, I couldn’t have been disturbing you, as I was here with my people.”

Zeus chuckled sarcastically, and replied, “We know how cunning you mortals can be.” He continued, “Such an offense deserves none other than a death penalty,” and withdrew his lightning bolt. 

The people of Thasos all gasped in astonishment. Agapios was still confused, but kept a straight and strong face at the god’s words. A sturdy hand at the ready, Zeus, prepared to slash at Agapios, taunted, “Any last words?”

Agapios cleared his throat and announced in a clear, proud voice, “I do not understand what I have done, but if the gods beseech a death penalty, then I am ready. It is almost night and my dear Andreanna has not returned, so if she is dead, I am ready to die to be with her.”

The people of Thasos wept at Agapios’ beautiful words, but Zeus killed him in an instant. 

When Agapios materialized in the underworld, and made his way to Hades’ palace once again, the smell of death in the air filled Agapios’ nostrils and once again. The sound of deadly creatures attacked his ears. 

He then enquired with the god about what had happened to their deal. 

Hades chortled, and in a in a sly tone, said, “Well, now that you’re dead anyway, I might as well explain to you what happened.”

Agapios, surprised, questioned, “What did happen?”

“I created that demon before the making of mankind, which is why no human knows the cause for my creating Hypatos.”

Agapios raised his eyebrows. He was stunned. But then, Hades spoke.  

“When my brothers were distributing the powers, I was given god of the underworld. I created Hypatos to bother my brothers because I was furious at them. The beast was supposed to take the form of the last being it saw when it bothered Zeus and Poseidon. But, when it came to earth, it got attached to that silly diamond, and wouldn’t do what it was created to do.” 

Mentally, time froze for Agapios. He had finally deciphered it all. Hades had tricked him. Opening the box created Hypatos again, and the gods thought that it was him who was provoking them, not the demon. He had done it all for Andreanna. But somewhere–somewhere, he had messed up.

“What about Andreanna?” Agapios questioned, regretting being so hasty with Hades earlier.

Hades stared out for a few seconds and said, “She’ll be departing to earth in a few minutes from now.”

Agapios dashed out of Hades’ palace as fast as he could and saw his beloved, whom he had endeavored so much to get back, standing in front of him. 

Andreanna gave him a smile and called, “Goodbye, my love.”
